Have you ever noticed how it seems that we have an inherent biased lens when we look in a mirror? Perhaps it is from staring at the same physical form all of our lives…maybe it’s the tinted/biased lens that society has shown us? Maybe it’s years of negative self talk that we picked up along the way? Maybe. Maybe not.
For me, I have trouble seeing myself as others do. I’m sure I am not alone in this…as I hear this amongst my friends as well. What an odd phenomena it is…
As I got ready for my most recent shoot with Lilac & Fern, my normal fears and insecurities began to pop up in my mind….but then I caught myself. All those little flaws (which sometimes feel like big flaws) that I notice so clearly, people on the outside, don’t even take notice.
As I watch Nicole snapping shots of the other ladies, I can’t help but think how beautiful they all look! I see others through rose tinted lenses…what a gift! How can I look in the mirror and keep that same gentle perspective? See ourselves as we are, not as are flaws.
I’m slowly growing more and more comfortable in my own skin. It might have taken me 30 years, and a whole lot of patience and unlearning….but slowly, it is working.
I review the photos Nicole got of me. “Wow! How did you make me look like that?” I think to myself. You know how? Because, I do look like that. We all look beautiful in our own unique ways. It’s simply a matter of seeing through the right lens.
Doing an intimate shoot has been one of the most freeing experiences. Seeing myself through Nicole’s lens…and how beautiful that is. I’m finally beginning to see my self as I am, and not as my flaws.
