“I was very ready for this shoot, so much that I had focused on packing two days prior & treated myself to an at-home spa day the afternoon before. On the day, I felt eerily calm. After all, this was going to be my 4th time in front of Nicole’s camera. As I put on some light makeup, I sat with my emotions, wondering how the day would go.
Upon arriving at the mines, we did some exploring, which included driving to the overlook. I felt a rush of excitement looking down at the beautiful layers below, eager to get started. Walking to our first spot, Nicole explained the plan for our shoot & shared memories from the last ambassador trip. I was getting butterflies walking among the colorful walls, prepared to get changed & start posing.
We shot in some lovely outfits while keeping a vigilant watch for others visiting the area. I admitted that I was less nervous about someone seeing me & more so that they would be offended to see me. To be shamed. Nicole quickly eased this anxiety because she was great about privacy. Keeping her ears open to folks approaching, she was always ready to toss over my towel or oversized tee for a quick cover-up.
Moving into my favorite part of the day, we picked out paints and covered my body. Posing among the clay rock & plants, I was genuinely living the moment. I was naked, not to be naughty or attention-seeking, but to enjoy freedom. To appreciate the sandy earth beneath me, the wind brushing past me, & the sun reaching out to hug my melanin skin. I felt so connected to myself, happy & alive.
I will most treasure the final moments of shooting. With the sun setting behind the ridge, we spontaneously decided to take a few more photos with me in an all-black look that made me feel like an apocalyptic Kween. Driving home, I felt a sense of pride & appreciation. Pleased to participate in self-appreciation through intimate portraits so shamelessly. And grateful for the opportunity to have a luxury experience.”
